Any white girls speak Mandarin?

Have any of you come across any good books or other resources on the subject? Or any of you that are learning Cantonese as well?

Back when I used to attend Chinese class on Saturdays, the top student was this white girl. I never talked to her or socialized with anyone because honestly I just didn't know anybody and couldn't relate. Ironically, because everybody spoke Chinese and I sucked at it. I'm losing the remnants of my Chinese linqual powers as I type. Then I left and refused to go back to class and my mom relented. Partly because the drive was way too long.

It always surprised me though, but after thinking about it for a bit, it's not that surprising at all. There's always that one guy or girl (the foreigner) who studies harder than the rest, and in the end speaks the language better than the natives themselves. Ok, maybe not the FOBs, but you know what I mean.

Oh, and she wasn't hot or anything, but kinda pretty. Hardly noticed girls back then.

I do think girls are so diplomantic towards their Chinese...But actually pretty good..Seems like first time speak English to foreigners to me..

I'm still learning it, but I have very little discipline so yeah... I shall put more effort into it. TT

I do can read a lot of characters (around 600 now) but it's hard for me to speak it actually -.- Damn tones.

Tones are hard, especially if you're not immersed in an Chinese speaking environment. However understanding the concept, which seems like you do is already half the battle. Keep at it, you'll get it.

I think a few can speak some...

Chinese Language is very difficult to learn i think. i have been learning it for about 20 years since primary school, then i still dont understand some of its words and sentence.

Mandarin is my mother language, even i think it is difficult to learn

but once you master this language, you are capable to communicate with 1.3 billion people in mainland china. and people from Taiwan, Singapore. and you even could guess the meaning of 30% Japanese language.

The more you learn, the harder it SEEMS to get!

I think its easier to retain, or it seems so, Mandarin (or Japanese also) once you've learned them. That could be be geography, and the type of multiculturalism here too. I mean, its more likely that there will be a chance to use the Chinese I learn. Increasingly so the more I learn. In this respect its easier to learn than the European languages they used to teach us in schools here.

On issues, "once mastered", why I chose it as a course of study - It doesn't matter where you go in the world; there is always a Chinatown! So if I don't speak the language of wherever I'm at, I can go to the local Chinatown, and get by okay. Hahaha.

I am still learning though, and have a very long road to go. I suspect even then, that like English, it will be a language where you never stop learning.
