Et si cette question m'était destinée, voici donc ma réponse :
Quand j'étais étudiant, je parlais avec un bien meilleur accent anglo-américain que maintenant. Mes interlocuteurs anglophones --britanniques ou américains-- me complimentaient souvent pour mon accent. Maintenant, ce n'est plus le cas. Je crois que j'ai beaucoup perdu. :cry:

I was trained to read French, not write. The idea is allowing me to read scientific journals and literature in French as part of school's requirement. So all I can do is give this a shot. My ability to read French came from some study of the language, understanding of English and Italian, maybe a little Latin.

Nice effort.
I admit French is not such an easy language to master if you didn't start it early. And your sentence in particuliar needs to be thought differently to make it sound very French. So, you can say it like this:

Un an et demi seulement d'apprentissage du français m'aura été utile ; car j'ai réussi à comprendre ce que tu as écrit. (or ce que vous avez écrit. in a formal way )

or even like that :
La petite année et demie consacrée à apprendre le français me reste encore utile ; car j'ai réussi à comprendre ce que tu as écrit. / ce que vous avez écrit.

or even like so (more spoken form ) :
Apprendre le français pendant une petite année et demie me sert encore à quelque chose ; car j'ai réussi à comprendre ce que tu as écrit. / ce que vous avez écrit.
