unethical business practice at my school

So there was this girl in my school (I don't know her because it's a gender segregated school but anyways) and she got in a boat accident on her birthday. Her cousin drowned, and the rest of her family is heavily injured. So the school started to make a fundraiser for her, I thought it was all good, and I went and read the information paper. Then I notice, at the bottom of the page, in really small letters, it said "1/2 of the money raised will go to support *school name* and 1/2 will go to support *the girl's name* and her family"... wtf?

What is your opinion on this?

What I agree with is charaties, fundraisers and other nonprofits taking enough to cover their own expenses plus a modest salary for the people working full-time. It's my belief that many times, tragedy can be used as just a tool. I don't know if that's the case with your school or not, sounds like they are taking more than just expenses to me, so mabye they they are not motivated solely by their desire to help the family.

I guess you could argue from the family's perspective, any help is better than no help.

How much do you think is enough? I know most of them will take a ridiculous amount of fund as 'administration cost' , but they never disclose that. I have no idea, but I will still donate if they are well known to offer service to people who need help.

If It is a state school that is free, I see no problem as the money raised will be going back into your education, facilities and services.

Our school used to do this all the time, we would have "non-uniform days" where you could wear your own clothes and you brought in £1, and with 1400 students it really helped the school out when we had a shortfall or needed some new equipment that would benefit us.

This is a private school, and they'd already charged $18,000 a year, plus every 1 or 2 weeks they ask for all kinds of donations that if you do all of it, then you end up paying something like $40,000 a year.

OK then I REALLY don't agree with that!

Making money off of someone else's tragedy. And the part that I never understand is that they are a Catholic school. But their behavior is purely greedy and blood sucking and hungry for money. It really is beyond me.

You should mention that you are in Catholic school in advance.

Your school did not have to do anything for that girl. But they did and decided to kept half the donations. At the end of the day, any amount to the family is better than nothing. Keep in mind that ANYONE can make a fundraiser and donate 100% to their family if they wanted to. But no one took the initiative to do so and your school took advantage of it. Thats life
