it's funny people always seem to confuse sadness for being the same as melancholy. Because there is a major difference between those two feelings. while sadness is a bitter feel filled with grief, melancholy is a bittersweet feel filled with a joyful void.

so there are ballads, which are sad songs, and then there are songs of melancholy, that can be fullfilling and embittering at the same time, but whereas ballads are always about love, melancholic songs can also be about nature, about being human or about oneself.
